Uniqueness

Petrified Forest National Park includes a grassland ecosystem and the badlands of the Painted Desert. The terrain changes quickly as you travel through the park, from the vistas of the Painted Desert, into the grassland of a large plateau, through grand geologic formations, and arrays of richly colored petrified wood. Make time to hike one of the park trails to discover sites that cannot be viewed via automobile.

Part of the Painted Desert, Petrified Forest National Park features a strangely beautiful landscape. Erosion has sculpted and shaped intriguing landforms, revealing a treasure trove of fossils within multi-colored layers. The rocks reveal an enthralling chronicle of time that is unfolding and ever-changing. The park contains one of the world’s largest and most colorful concentrations of petrified wood, the multi-hued badlands of the Chinle Formation, and portions of the Painted Desert, historic structures, archeological sites, and displays of ancient fossils. New fossils are found every year! The Hopi Butte Volcanic Field, which can be seen from the northern overlooks of the park extending northwest, is considered one of the largest concentrations of maar landforms in the world, covering about 965 sq. miles (2,500 sq. km).

Visitors can drive the 28 miles of the park road, stopping at any number of overlooks to see petrified wood, petroglyphs, archeological sites, and Painted Desert vistas. Those with more time can explore the secrets of the backcountry.
