Uniqueness
From the sagebrush at its alluvial base to the 13,063-foot summit of Wheeler Peak, Nevada’s second highest peak, Great Basin National Park includes streams, lakes, alpine plants, abundant wildlife, a variety of forest types including groves of ancient bristlecone pines, and numerous limestone caverns. This wild and beautiful land is a great place to spend a day, a week, or more for a family adventure vacation. The park offers a myriad of activities including auto touring, backpacking, biking, bird watching, camping, caving, cross country skiing, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, interpretive programs, nature walks, old mines to see, snowshoeing, stargazing, wilderness area, and wildlife viewing.
Since a great family vacation involves everyone, a good walk to break in a young hiker begins at the Summit Trailhead and leads to beautiful Stella Lake. Round trip distance is less than 2.5 miles. Elevation gain is minimal. Great Basin National Park will be offering more scheduled Night Sky Programs (check for a schedule at 775-234-7331 x 212). Campfire programs are offered in the summer season at Upper Lehman Creek and Wheeler Peak Campgrounds. Program topics vary, covering subjects related to Great Basin National Park’s cultural and natural resources. They have programs that last 40-60 minutes. Please come prepared with warm clothing and a lantern or flashlight. It generally runs mid-June through Labor Day. Days and times of programs change throughout the season. Call the park at (775) 234-7331, ext. 212, stop in at the visitor center, or check the campground bulletin boards for further information on these programs.
Lehman Caves is a beautiful limestone cave ornately decorated with stactities, stalagmites, helictities, flowstone, popcorn, and over 300 rare shield formations that you may enjoy on your visit. Another unique feature of the park in the Lexington Arch. Rising high above the floor of Lexington Canyon, this imposing natural arch was created by the forces of weather working slowly over a span of centuries. Lexington Arch is unusual in one important respect: it is carved from limestone. Take a hike up to the arch to see it for yourself.
